1. Centrelink advance payments
If you receive a Centrelink payment, you may be able to get an advance of between $250 and $1,500 — interest-free — paid back by deductions from future payments. Call Services Australia on 132 717.
2. Utility hardship programs
Every electricity, gas, and water retailer in Australia is required to have a hardship program. If you can’t pay a bill, call them before the due date. They can pause, extend, or waive late fees — often on a single call.
3. Community support via No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)
NILS provides loans of up to $2,000 at 0% interest for essential goods and services (fridges, car repairs, medical). Eligibility is based on low income. Find a NILS provider at goodshep.org.au.
